Unified Data Platform Strategy

Strategy document from 2025, not a description of the code. The shared-module plan below (shared/aws-optimization, shared/network-algorithms, shared/compression, shared/metrics) was not built: no such module exists in either repository. What ObjectFS actually consumes from CargoShip is pkg/aws/s3 (the upload transporter) and pkg/aws/config, imported directly — see internal/storage/s3/client.go.

One item did land on CargoShip's side and is not yet used here: CargoShip now exports pkg/s3optimization (access-pattern analysis, predictive prefetch, adaptive scheduling). ObjectFS imports none of it, and has its own prefetcher in internal/cache/predictive.go. That overlap is tracked as an issue rather than described here as done.

The "Success Metrics" section carried a 4.6x throughput figure ObjectFS never measured; it is removed below for the reason given in docs/index.md — a number nothing produced is worse than no number.

Overview

ObjectFS and CargoShip form a comprehensive data lifecycle management platform under unified development and control. This document outlines the strategic approach for coordinated development, shared technology stacks, and integrated product roadmaps.

Technical Integration Points

1. Metadata Compatibility

ObjectFS Metadata Format

# .objectfs/metadata/file.yaml
key: "data/project/file.dat"
size: 1048576
checksum: "sha256:abc123..."
cache_policy: "aggressive"
access_pattern: "sequential"

CargoShip Inventory Format

# inventory.yaml (compatible subset)

    checksum: "sha256:abc123..."
    compression: "zstd"
    archived_at: "2025-07-27T10:00:00Z"

2. Performance Optimization Sharing

From CargoShip to ObjectFS

  • Congestion control: BBR/CUBIC selection, which ObjectFS implements itself in internal/network as a per-socket TCP_CONGESTION option on Linux

3. Compression Algorithm Unification

Shared Implementation

// shared/compression/algorithms.go
type CompressionAlgorithm interface {
    Compress(data []byte) ([]byte, error)
    Decompress(data []byte) ([]byte, error)
    Ratio() float64
}

// Used by both ObjectFS (per-object) and CargoShip (archive-level)
